The Origins of Pride

Pride month began in New York City at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. Here, there was a series of protests for gay liberation. During this time, very few establishments welcomed gay people due to laws against homosexuality. Police had raided these protests, where the group of Stonewall’s gay fighters stood their ground and continued to fight for what was right. Since this date, pride month has made its way out of New York and even out of the United States as it became a worldwide celebration. A year after this historic event, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco held their first gay parade. This powerful movement helped them spread awareness and the importance of the LGBTQ+ community. To do this, pride month honors and celebrates gay pride and the importance of diversity in our communities.

How Pride Month Is Celebrated

Pride month can be celebrated in many different ways. One of the most common ways pride month is celebrated is through a gay pride parade. These parades help spread awareness and allow LGBTQ+ members and other groups to come together and celebrate something as one. Different ways to celebrate pride month may include hosting parties or concerts, donating to an organization that supports gay pride, or even supporting local businesses or online shops that are owned by or support LGBTQ+ members.
